The Short Belfast is often described as being “derived from” the Bristol Britannia because it wasn’t a clean-sheet design—it was built around the Britannia’s aerodynamic and structural concept, heavily stretched and reinforced for military freight work.

The key link is that both aircraft trace back to Bristol’s turboprop transport design studies from the early 1950s. The Britannia was designed as a long-range passenger airliner using efficient high-aspect-ratio wings and Bristol Proteus turboprops. When the RAF later needed a very large strategic freighter, the basic Britannia layout provided a proven starting point rather than inventing a new airframe from scratch.

The Belfast essentially reused and adapted major Britannia components and design philosophy:

The wing is the clearest shared element. The Belfast uses a heavily strengthened and enlarged version of the Britannia’s wing concept, including similar planform and aerodynamic characteristics. While it was structurally beefed up for much higher loads, it remained recognisably “Britannia-derived” in layout and efficiency.

The engines also maintain continuity. Both aircraft used Bristol turboprops (the Britannia using the Proteus; the Belfast using more powerful variants such as the Proteus 765), so the propulsion system lineage is directly connected.

Fuselage design is where the divergence is greatest. The Belfast’s fuselage is much deeper and wider, designed for outsized military cargo, but even here the design philosophy—pressurised, long-range transport with similar cockpit and systems architecture—was carried over from the Britannia baseline.

Finally, the development was done by Short Brothers, which effectively took Bristol’s proven airliner and re-engineered it into a heavy-lift strategic transport. So while the Belfast is not just a “stretched Britannia,” it is best understood as a militarised, enlarged evolution of the same core British turboprop transport design.
